The direct line
Rocky's Boots (1982)
The predecessor, from the same designer heritage at The Learning Company. Same real logic gates, much gentler ramp. This one was the commercial hit; Robot Odyssey was the masterpiece that outran its audience.
DroidQuest
A faithful free Java recreation of Robot Odyssey by Thomas Foote, who famously spent years of his life stuck inside the original. The closest thing to playing the real game without an emulator.
GATE
A free spiritual successor by engineer Quinn Dunki. Small, sharp, and built on the same conviction that real circuits are playable.
ChipWits (1984)
Robot Odyssey's friendlier contemporary: program a robot with icon tiles instead of wires. Recently revived, still charming.
The original, itself
Playable in the browser at the Internet Archive. Fair warning: the difficulty mythology is not mythology. Data Driven Gamer's full playthrough is the best modern account of what it actually demands.
The school it founded
Critics draw a straight line from Robot Odyssey to the modern optimization-puzzle school: build a machine from primitive parts, watch it run, weep, iterate.
The Zachtronics catalog
SpaceChem, Opus Magnum, TIS-100, SHENZHEN I/O. Opus Magnum in particular inherits Robot Odyssey's single most loved idea: composable machines you design once and reuse.
